The Indian electronic visa system was introduced by the Indian Government in 2014. Its introduction was aimed at speeding and facilitating the entire application procedure. eVisa to India is an electronic authorization allowing eligible travelers to travel to India for short-term purposes related to tourism, business, or medical treatment.

India offers 5 different types of electronic visas that differ in terms of the allowed period of stay in India, number of entries, travel reasons, and the validity period. A traveler should apply for the one that best matches their Indian travel plans.

Since the application for an eVisa to India is an entirely online process, applicants do not need to bother themselves with Embassy appointments anymore.

Application for an eVisa to India can be completed with any Internet-accessed electronic device and within 3 business days, the applicant receives the confirmation that their electronic visa was approved.

Available types of eVisa to India

Depending on your particular reason why you wish to travel to India, you have 5 options of electronic visas to choose from:

  1. a 30-day single-entry tourist visa (valid for 1 year from its issuance date)
  2. a 180-day multiple-entry business visa (valid for 4 months from its issuance date)
  3. a 60-day triple-entry medical visa (valid for 4 months from its issuance date)
  4. a 365-day multiple-entry tourism visa
  5. a 5-year multiple-entry visa (for multiple 90-day stays)

Please note! If you are a traveler from the US or Japan, do remember that you can stay for up to 6 months with a 5-year eVisa to India.

Requirements to apply for India eVisa

Standard documents
  • face photo of a person applying for an eVisa to India
  • passport not expiring for at least 180 days from the date of the intended entry to India
Additional documents

Travelers entering India for business or medical purposes will also need to submit:

  • an invitation letter from the company in India you wish to cooperate with or its business card (if your travel purpose is business-related)
  • a written document from an Indian hospital or medical institution based in India, including details of your medical treatment (if you travel to India for medical reasons)

How to apply for an Indian visa online?

If you have gathered all the necessary documents, now is the time for submitting your visa application form. Follow these simple steps:
  1. Firstly, choose only one eVisa type from the available ones.
  2. Next, go to the online form and provide all the necessary details.
  3. Double-check all the information entered. Only if making sure that your application is error-free, move on to the next step.
  4. Cover the processing fee using one of the available forms of online payment.
  5. Check your email inbox. The confirmation of submitting your online visa application form should already be there.

After maximally 72 business hours, the approved e-Visa to India will be sent to your email address too.

Please note that the processing time may take a bit longer due to various reasons, including making some mistakes in your online form. The final decision to approve your visa application is at the total discretion of the Indian authorities.

Once you receive your e-Visa in PDF form, make sure to download it and print it out. Do not forget to take its physical copy for your trip to India!

What happens after applying?

From the moment you submitted your application, you need to wait maximally 3 business days to receive the approval of your Indian eVisa.

Please do remember that it is the standard processing time that may be extended due to different reasons, e.g. some mistakes made in your online application. Moreover, the final decision, as well as the exact processing time, are determined by the Indian Government which is the entity that must approve your visa application.

Once your eVisa is approved, you will receive its confirmation in a PDF file. Do not forget to save it on your electronic device and print it out. Take its printed copy for your trip and be ready to show it during the border control when entering India.

  • Eligible travelers can choose from 5 various types of electronic visas for India
  • There is no need to leave the comfort of your home to apply for an Indian eVisa
  • The application for eVisa to India must be submitted at least 72 business hours prior to the planned Indian trip
  • eVisa to India is automatically linked with the passport used in the visa application - any change or update in your passport makes your eVisa invalid
  • It is impossible to extend eVisa to India
